Original manuscript of Conrad's first novel, complete except for chapter 9. With many corrections and alterations. Foliated: ch. 1, 1-28 (28 repeated); ch. 2, 1-20; ch. 3, 1-23; ch. 4, 1-22 (draft of letter in Polish on verso of page 1); ch. 5, 1-27; ch. 6, 1-26; ch. 7, 1-31; ch. 8, 1-28, 30-32; ch. 10, 1-26 (11 repeated); ch. 11, 1-35 (1, 20, 25, and 34 repeated); ch. 12, 1-38. Also present are the preface, in AMs (3 p.) and TS (2 copies, 2 p. each); photostat of an autograph note by Conrad to John Quinn about the manuscript; the original wrapper for the manuscript, inscribed with the history of its writing, and the address panel of an envelope in which Conrad mailed the manuscript to Quinn.
